[hal-see-uh n]

  1. adjective calm; peaceful; tranquil: halcyon weather
  2. noun a mythical bird, usually identified with the kingfisher, said to breed about the time of winter solstice in a nest floating on the sea, and to the have the power of charming winds and waves into calmness

The Halcyon series developed as a very meditative and explorative practice in painting. While I was painting these, I frequently listened to a song called “Halcyon Birds” by the band Broken Back from Saint-Malo, France. I identified strongly with the need for tranquility and calmness this winter and was intrigued with the story of the Halcyon bird too, and the desire to “nest”, as I was pregnant with my second child at the time.  I also visited Saint Malo when I was in France in 1997, so that was a neat connection.

The yellow areas of this painting are actually gold coloured paint which has a beautiful shimmer.
