Along the Estuary
An original 16 x 16″ acrylic painting on canvas.
Along the Estuary was painted in a number of intuitive layers. Early on I dripped black acrylic ink across the canvas and scratched into it before it dried. Using such a bold, dark colour in this manner is new to me and changed the direction of the painting. The scratch marks reminded me of grasses along the Comox estuary that change colour and shape with in ebbing and flowing tide. Contrasting these marks are softer brushstrokes and warm tones that suggest morning or evening light. I love the notion of constant and continual changes in the environment. There is movement, of the river flowing of the tide rising, of the weather changing – and yet I feel a a stillness in myself, a sense of calm.
